The Miracle of Matzah Pizza: A Biblical Tall Tale
Matzah pizza is a Passover favorite of kids. After matzah at seder and matzah with cream cheese, it’s time for . . . matzah pizza!
But how did matzah pizza actually come to be? Zaydee tells Mikey a fun and zany version of the traditional Passover story. Did Miriam carry tomatoes on her head as well as matzah on her back while leaving Egypt? Did mozzarella cheese come from talking cows who were moo-ving to Israel? Was there magically enough matzah pizza for all the escaping Israelites? Perhaps Zaydee’s tall tale is “udderly unbelievable” . . . but it sure is fun!
Praise for The Miracle of Matzah Pizza: A Biblical Tall Tale
Koffsky concocts a comically far-fetched origin story for matzo-crust pizza in this punny picture book. It’s day three of Passover when young Sammy becomes sick of eating matzo, and grand- father Zaydee offers a solution in the form of a tale and a recipe. Cut to ancient times: thick-lined cartooning shows Israelite boy Shmuel (“That’s my name in Hebrew!” Sammy notes) eating matzo during the exodus when a tomato from Miriam’s basket plops onto his flatbread. Talking cows “mooo-ving” to Israel provide milk that Moses uses his staff to turn into mozzarella cheese, and the hot sun bakes it to perfection….Miracles come in many forms, including culinary ones, this playful Passover tale suggests. -Publishers Weekly
“In the tradition of midrash, Ann Koffsky offers an explanation for how our ancestors came to enjoy the delightful treat of matzah topped with tomato sauce and cheese… highly recommended.” –Emily Schneider, Jewish Book World
All it takes is a bit of creativity to make modified snack time enjoyable in this lighthearted picture book about finding fresh meaning in holiday traditions. By the third day of Pesach, Sammy is tired of matzah. That’s when his grandfather steps in with a brilliant idea: pizza, Passover style! He spins Sammy a Bible-adjacent yarn about a boy just like him at the time of the exodus from Egypt, whose own culinary boredom was interrupted by the happy accident of matzah pizza’s invention. The illustrations have a fun throwback quality, enlivening this tasty tall tale (recipe included).-Michelle Anne Schingler, Foreword Reviews
The Miracle of Matzah Pizza….will have you convinced matzah pizza deserves a place on the seder plate. To partially steal Koffsky’s back cover pun, the story is udderly delightful. Sammy doesn’t just learn about Passover, he imagines himself there. Similarly, I loved that the special guest were named Miri and Mo. Remind you of someone from the story of Passover?
The Miracle of Matzah Pizza is fun and silly and filled with joy. Zaydee is the perfect storyteller with jokes that will appeal to kids and their adult readers alike.-Judith Magazine
