I love Purim! I think it’s my favorite holiday. You get candy, and you can drive home after seudah (unlike some of our 3 day extravaganzas!)

Here’s my top 10 favorite Purim things to see, listen to, taste, and enjoy from around the web.(oh–and the photo is from a couple of Purims ago when my kids dressed up as the Newsies).

 

#1 Family Fun Magazine: Great costume ideas. For some reason, they are under the impression that these  are for Halloween. However, with the exception of a ghost or two, these creative costumes are clearly perfect Purim material.

 

#2  Challah Crumbs  They have a great roundup of (classic and easy!) mishloach manot ideas…beer and nuts, milk and cookies and a bunch more. (And BTW–is that not the best name for a blog? So clever. I wish I thought of that!)

 

#3 NY Times Hamantaschen recipe There is no way I am EVER making this recipe. Boiling the prunes to make the filling? That is outside my skill set. But I enjoyed reading about the way it used to be done. For  more practical hamantaschen tips, ask the  Ima on and off the bima.

 

#4 Kveller has a great idea that I never heard of before: Colorful popcorn that can easily coordinate with whatever theme you’re working on for Purim.

 

#5 YU  This holiday isn’t just for kids you know. Really–there are complex thoughts and intellectual things to learn about this holiday. If you want to feed your brain, (and not just stomach with all that candy) visit Yeshiva University’s list of  Purim divrei torah. It’s an amazing list to choose from.

 

#6 Fountainheads Don’t get me wrong–I LOVE  the Maccabeats. But if you have seen them a zillion times, like in my house, this is another fun song to enjoy.

 

#7 On the Jewish Museum’s site, they have this incredibly nifty grogger –plus about 20 other historical Purim objects. Feast for the eyes.

 

#8 OU Safety advisory about drinking on Purim. Boring but important.

 

#9  Homeshuling And since kids books are my thing, read Amy Meltzer’s interview with Eric Kimmel about his book, “The Story of Esther”.
