I was very inspired by the illustrations that Dena Ackerman created for my new book, Sarah Builds A School.

Co-Authored with Leslie Ginsparg Klein, the book tells the story of Sara Schenirer, and the beginnings of formalized Jewish education for girls and women.  Dena did a fantastic job with it, and I just loved seeing the characters come to life in their ornate blouses and elegant hair styles. I wanted to try my own hand at it, so…it was coloring page time! I don’t think I achieved Dena’s realism–I’m normally more of a “cute” illustrator–but it was fun to try something different.

(Plus, I really wanted to create an image of women learning with a sefer. We have lots of art out there showing men in the best midrash; time for female version, no?)

If you’d like to use this image, just click and print. Or, you can get a pdf of it over here: girlstorah.

Happy coloring. Happy learning,

Ann
